Haminoea
sp. #1

Haminoea sp. #1
Maximum size:  6 mm.

Identification:  This species has a strongly inflated transparent shell without spiral striae. The animal is very similar to Haminoea ovalis. However, the orange spots showing through the shell are substantially larger than in comparably sized specimens of that species.

Natural history:  Haminoea sp. #1 is a rare haminoeid known from three animals found in exposed to highly exposed rocky habitats at 6-12 m (20-40 ft).

Distribution:  Maui.

Taxonomic notes:  It's possible that these animals may be an extreme variant of H. ovalis rather than a distinct species. It was first recorded in Hawaii from off Makena, Maui by PF in Oct., 1999.
