Dendrodoris sp. #8
Maximum size: 16 mm.
Identification:
This
is an elongate, white species with sharply margined brown spots on the notum and opaque-white branchia. It differs from young Dendrodoris elongata in its lighter color, proportionately smaller rhinophores and opaque-white branchia.
Natural history:
Dendrodoris sp.
#8 is known from one animal found at a depth of < 4 m (< 12 ft) in a moderately exposed rocky habitat.
Distribution:
Maui.
Taxonomic notes: This species
was first recorded in Hawaii at Maalaea Bay, Maui by Gordon Hendler on
June 2, 2012. In general appearance, it seems closer to
such Eastern Pacific species as Dendrodoris behrensi and Dendrodoris stohleri than to D. elongata (as well as to unidentified species from French Polynesia, the Marshall Islands and elsewhere in the Indo-Pacific).
