Dentimargo pumila (Redfield, 1870)

Dentimargo pumila
Maximum size:  5 mm shell length (Kay, 1979).

Identification:  This is a small, elongate species with a nearly transparent shell and a relatively broad shoulder (for the family). The animal is translucent-cream flecked with yellowish white and the eyes are black. The mantle has irregular white tubercles and black and cream patches show through the shell.

Natural history:  Dentimargo pumila is a moderately common species found in rocky habitats at moderately protected to moderately exposed sites.

Distribution:  Maui and Oahu: widely distributed in the Indo-Pacific.

Taxonomic notes: It may also be listed in Severns, 2011, as Dentimargo cf. fusiformis (worn shell). (Note 1)

Photo:  CP: Papawai Point, Maui; Nov. 21, 2004.

Observations and comments:

Note 1:  The description of the live animal in Kay, 1979, appears closer to Volvarina fusiformis and vice versa. Perhaps, they were transposed?
