Gymnodoris sp. #5
Maximum size: 25-38 mm.
Identification:
This
is
a translucent-cream species without orange spotting. The notum of the
smaller animal was
mottled with slightly darker white and covered with minute brown flecks
(only visible under magnification). The genital pore in the larger
animal was located far forward of the branchia and the oral tentacles
weren't visibly set off from the foot margin. The rhinophores of both animals were flattened and leaf-like with few lamellae.
Natural history:
Gymnodoris sp. #5
is known from only two individuals: a 5.1 mm animal found at a depth
of < 1 m (<
3 ft) in a moderately protected rocky habitat on Maui and a much larger
animal found at < 3 m (< 10 ft) at a moderately exposed site on
the Big Island.
Distribution:
Big Island and Maui.
Taxonomic notes: It was first
recorded in Hawaii from Hekili Point, Maui by CP on Oct. 14, 1997.
