Limacina trochiformis (d'Orbigny, 1836)
Maximum size: 0.7 mm shell
length (rarely over 0.5 mm).
Identification:
Shells of this species have a moderately low spire with a strongly
inflated body whorl. Large animals may occasionally develop fine spiral
striae.
Natural history:
Shells of Limacina trochiformis are common in
sand
samples.
Distribution:
Maui: circumglobal.
Taxonomic notes:
Hawaiian shells appear to be smaller with less prominent sutures on the
apical whorls than in most populations. (Note 1)
Photo: CP:
0.5 mm: from a sand sample provided by Mike Severns and PF; off Makena,
Maui;
Dec.1991.
Observations and comments:
Note
1: We've only seen one damaged
shell that probably exceeded 0.5 mm in length. That shell also had the
fine spiral striae reported for large specimens of the species from
elsewhere. (see photo)
