Identification:
This
is
a
relatively
large
animal
with
a
broad,
smooth shell.
Natural history:
Philine puka is
known only from animals dredged from depths between 200 and 363 m (656
and 1187 ft).
Distribution:
Big Island, Oahu and Laysan.
Taxonomic notes:
It
was
first
recorded
in
Hawaii
by the U.S. Fisheries Commission steamer Albatross on March 28, 1902
off Diamond Head Light, Oahu from 269-363 m (882-1187 ft). The name
puka, the Hawaiian word for hole, refers to the pores on the gizzard
plates.
