Rissoella sp. #1
Maximum size: 1 mm shell
length.
Identification:
This
species has a very small, transparent-white shell with an angled
umbilicus. It has a more slender profile than the other Rissoella shells from Hawaii. Live
animals are
cream with diffuse gray-black and white patches.
Natural history:
Shells
of Rissoella sp. #1
are rare in
beach drift. Live animals are occasionally found in shallow rocky
habitats.
Distribution:
Maui; fall, 1991.
Taxonomic notes:
Assigning
these shells to the
live photo is somewhat uncertain. Also, slenderer shells may include
more than one species since there is quite a bit of variation in
protoconch size within the small available sample (including between
the right
and left shells in the photo).
