Identification:
This
is a plump, peanut-shaped animal with large, centrally located swimming
"wings." Its body is nearly transparent with a fine network of internal
granules and veins.
Natural history:
Thliptodon diaphanus is a pelagic species that is rarely seen in near-shore waters at night.
Distribution:
Big Island: circumtropical.
Taxonomic notes: It was probably first recorded in Hawaii off the Kona Coast of the Big Island by Boz Johnson on Dec. 28, 2021. (Note 1)

Note
1: Previously, we listed this species as occurring in the north Pacific near Hawaii based
on
the range maps in Pelagic
Molluscs. However, Boz's photo confirms its
presence in near-shore waters. His photograph, taken during a black water
dive off Kona can be seen here.
