Roxaniella sp. #9

Roxaniella sp. #9: shell
Maximum size:  4 mm shell length.

Identification:  The shell of this species is similar to shells of Diniatys dentifer in sculpture but lacks the columellar tooth characteristic of that species.

Natural history:  Roxaniella sp. #9 is known from two shells: one found in beach drift at Midway Atoll, the other found in a sand sample taken at 8-16 m (25-54 ft) on the Big Island. Nothing is known about the living animal.

Distribution:  Big Island & Midway.

Taxonomic notes:  It was first recorded in Hawaii from Midway Atoll by CP from a sand sample provided by PF in June, 1993. Manuel Malaquais suggested that it's in the genus Roxaniella. (pers. com.)
