Avaldesia albomacula
(Chan & Gosliner, 2007)

Avaldesia albomacula
Maximum size:  28 mm.

Identification:  This dorid is similar to Avaldesia tamatoa but lacks obvious ridging/pitting on the notum and lacks white on it's rhinophores. The color of the notum and the development of the white "dash" anterior to the branchia are probably variable.

Natural history:  Avaldesia albomacula is known from one animal found at < 10 m (33 ft) at a moderately exposed site. (Note 1)

Distribution:  Maui: widely distributed in the western & central Pacific.

Taxonomic notes:  May have first been recorded in Hawaii from Maalaea Bay, Maui by CP on April 1, 2017. It was formerly lumped with Avaldesia tamatoa under Thordisa albomacula.

Photo:  CP: 28  mm: Maalaea Bay, Maui; April 1, 2017.

Observations and comments:

Note 1:  Some ambiguous animals currently placed with A. tamatosa may belong with it. The animal in the photo was sequenced for the original paper.
