Doriopsilla sp. #1
Maximum size: 20 mm (Gosliner,
et. al., 2008).
Identification:
This is a cream species decorated with diffuse orange-brown patches.
The
branchia and rhinophores are orange-brown, spotted with white, and the
notum is densely covered with irregular tubercles. The larger tubercles
are tipped with small dark brown spots.
Natural history:
Doriopsilla sp. #1
is a rare species known from only two animals. The Oahu animal was
found at a highly exposed rocky site at a depth of about 5 m (16 ft).
Distribution:
Oahu and Midway: possibly known from Japan.
Taxonomic notes: It was first recorded in Hawaii at Makua, Oahu by Scott Johnson on Oct. 28,
1985.
