Gymnodoris sp. #2
Maximum size: 32 mm.
Identification:
This
species varies from cream to bright orange with orange spots. The
genital pore is located well forward of the branchia and the branchia
form a nearly complete circle around the anus. The rhinophores have
nipple-like tips and the oral tentacles are narrow. A row of slightly
enlarged orange-tipped papillae runs backwards from the head on each
side of the body to enclose the branchia. The rhinophores often have
orange tips and occasionally the branchia may also be tipped with
orange. The narrow oral tentacles and nipple-like tips on the
rhinophores distinguish it from the similar appearing Gymnodoris
bicolor.
Natural history:
Gymnodoris sp. #2
is a moderately rare species found in the low intertidal and subtidally to depths of 7 m (22 ft). It occurs at moderately
protected to exposed rocky sites.
