Haloa sp. #5

Maximum size: 4 mm.
Identification:
This
species has a thin shell similar to that of Haloa crocata but with more spiral striae than typical for juveniles
of that species. The animal is translucent-cream flecked with white.
Patches of dense white pigment and widely spaced violet-brown spots
show through the shell. The wide spacing and diffuse
margins of the spots distinguish it from H. crocata.
Natural history:
Haloa sp. #5
is
known from two animal found at a depth of < 1 m (< 3
ft) at moderately protected to exposed rocky locations.
Distribution:
Maui and Oahu.
Taxonomic notes:
There's
some chance that these animals might turn out to be atypical H. crocata. It was first
recorded in Hawaii from Hekili Point, Maui by CP on Oct. 16, 1997.
