Melampus(?) sculptus (Pfeiffer,
1850)
Maximum size: 11 mm (Kay,
1979).
Identification:
The
shell of this species is ovate and brown. There are three folds
inside the outer lip and two folds on the columella. (Kay, 1979)
Natural history:
According to Kay
(l979), Melampus(?) sculptus is an uncommon species found in association with Melampus parvulus. We have yet to
see it on Maui.
Distribution:
Oahu: widely distributed in the western and central Pacific.
Taxonomic notes:
Kay (1979) lists this species as Pira Sculptus (Pfeiffer, 1850). It's listed as Melampus semiplicata in Edmondson, 1946.
