Odostomella rosa (Pilsbry, 1918)
Maximum size: 1.7 mm shell
length.
Identification:
The
shell
of this species is ovate with prominent axial ribs. It
has four whorls when mature and is bright violet when unworn. The
axial ribs increase in size abruptly at the transition between the
protoconch and teleoconch. That trait and its color distinguish it from
Herviera gliriella and Herviera sp. #2. The animal is cream.
Natural history:
Shells
of Odostomella rosa
are
moderately rare in beach drift. Live animals are found occasionally in
shallow rocky habitats.
Distribution:
Maui, French Frigate Shoals and Midway.
Taxonomic notes:
The
description
of H. gliriella
in Kay, 1979 suggests that she may not have been distinguishing it from Odostomella rosa and Herviera sp. #2.
