Paradoris sp. #4
Maximum size: about 15 mm.
Identification:
This
is
a dusky-gray species variably frosted with brown and flecked with
white.
The white flecks form three irregular clusters on each side of the
notum surrounding low tubercles that become more prominent with growth.
The branchia are located far to the rear and are frosted with white
while the anal papilla is
dark brown or black. There are a few irregular, diffuse brown streaks
and brown spots on
the notum while the rhinophores are flecked with brown and white. The
brown markings distinguish it from un. discodorid sp. #8.
Natural history:
Paradoris sp. #4
is known from only three animals found in rocky habitats. The 2022
animal was found at about 2 m (6 ft). It may lay a white egg mass.
Distribution:
Big Island and Maui: may also be known from Bali.
Taxonomic notes:
This
is Paradoris sp. A in
Dayrat (2006). It was first recorded in Hawaii from Maui by PF on Jan.
13, 1992. There's some uncertainty regarding lumping the young animal with the others.
