Vellicola sp. #15
Maximum size: 4.5 mm.
Identification:
This species has a moderately thick shell with more prominent spiral striae on its apex and base than in Vellicola sp. #13.
The animal is translucent-brown patterned with clusters of compact
white rosettes separated by irregular rings of red-brown flecks. Younger
animals have a yellow background. It may be distinguished
from Vellicola muscarius by its more compact rosettes.
Natural history: Vellicola sp. #15
is
a rare species found in rocky habitats from < 1 to 5 m
(< 3 to 16 ft). It occurs at moderately protected to moderately
exposed sites. It shows a diurnal activity pattern when held in dishes.
Distribution:
Maui.
Taxonomic notes:
This species was formerly listed as a color form of juvenile Vellicola muscarius
and its shells may be difficult to distinguish from shells of that
species (pending further work). It was first recorded in Hawaii from
Kapalua Bay, Maui by CP on April 22, 1996.
